About the Firm

Local Studio is a residential architecture practice that specializes in thoughtful, quiet, and site-specific design projects, and embraces regional New England vernacular architecture. The studio focuses on highly detailed, custom residential projects ranging from coastal homes to historic renovations. Local Studio operates with an agile approach, balancing digital workflows with traditional craftsmanship like manual sketching and physical modeling.

Qualifications

Candidates shall have 8–10 years of postgraduate residential experience in New England in all phases of a design project. A strong candidate should love the holistic nature of small-firm practice and be equally comfortable diving into complex construction detailing and working directly with clients and builders on several projects simultaneously. Additionally, candidates should thrive in independent environments, possess strong technical execution, and maintain a high level of design sensibilities. Candidates must be excellent designers, communicators, highly organized, and have a strong sense of how to work methodically and manage time.

Core Responsibilities

- Technical Production: Develop, manage, and coordinate complete, highly detailed construction document sets for all phases and critical project milestones (pricing, permitting construction, and for various approval processes that might be required for a project).

- Design Collaboration: Seamlessly transition hand sketches and concept discussions into CAD drawings, digital models, and visuals for client meetings, contributing strong design sensibilities throughout all project phases.

- Project Management: Coordinate structural engineers, civil consultants, specialized vendors, and general contractors throughout the entire project for several projects simultaneously.

- Client-Facing Representation: Present design concepts, manage client expectations, and run on-site construction meetings throughout New England. Strong interpersonal skills are critical.

- Operational Agility: Maintain independent discipline over timelines, tasks, and project budgets using cloud-based tools to take ownership of work and deadlines.

Required Skills & Expertise

- 8–10 years post-graduate work experience in residential architecture in New England.

- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and SketchUp. Strong experience with VRay, Adobe Creative Suite, and Nano Banana is also very important. A willingness to learn other rendering agents and collaboration software is also helpful. The studio also makes use of several project management software platforms (Freshbooks, Asana, and others). Candidates should be familiar with or quickly adapt to these types of programs.

- Demonstrated ability to independently assemble an entire coordinated residential drawing set for various project milestones. Candidates should be very adept at both high-level architectural drawings as well as technical interior and exterior detailing. Deep understanding of and interest in wood-frame construction and detailing is critical.

- Comfort using hand-sketching and physical model-making workflows; an appreciation for the tangible craft of architecture.

- Must be based in Greater Boston with a valid driver’s license and vehicle for site visits, client meetings, and vendor meetings.

Benefits:

- Paid Time Off: 3 weeks of standard annual paid vacation.
